Learn the Terms - Veils and Trains

Choosing your veil can be a daunting task, and add to the stress of your wedding. By educating yourself on the terms and styles of veils, you will be able to pick the one that compliments your own dress and personal style.
- Blusher: worn over your face, anywhere from just below the eyes to just below the chin
- Birdcage: typically made with French or Russian veiling. Can be worn various ways, but typically is attached to a fascinator, hat, headband or headpiece. Can fall from just above the eyes to just below the chin.
- Flyaway: falls between the ears and the shoulder
- Shoulder: Falls at the shoulder; Usually from 18" to 27", with the most common length of 20".
- Elbow: falls to the elbow or waist; Usually ranges from 25" to 36", with 25" being the most common length.
- Fingertip: falls to the fingertips or just below the waist; typically ranges from 36" to 50". Depending on your height, build, etc. the length will vary. This veil should just meet your fingertips. Measure from where you are going to wear the veil on your head to your fingertips to get an idea of the Bridal veil length that is right for you. A 36" length is the most common length for a fingertip veil.
- Knee: to the knees; Usually 45" long.
- Waltz or Ballet: falls to the ankles; usually 54" to 60". This veil is sometimes also called a Ballerina or Walking veil. The bottom of the veil should land somewhere between your calves and just above the ankles.
- Chapel: falls slightly longer than the floor; just touches the floor. It can range from 60" to 90". The most common length is 90".
- Cathedral: 9 feet or longer; This veil is dramatic, as it trails after the bride. This can range from 100" to 110" long. The most common lengths are 108" or 120" long.egal: Are the longest of all veils. They can be as long as 144"-- or longer.
